Having been in business for 10 years, there is no question we receive more than “Why the name Chikmedia?” This is a long, complex story. One that should be told over a glass of wine… but the 30,000 feet answer is: because of sexual harassment. Yup, that’s it. That’s a very oversimplified version of the story, but the sentiment rings true.
As the President of this company, I made the bold choice a decade ago to take back the word “Chick,” and use it to empower women instead of belittling them. Our mission as a company is to support women entrepreneurs to find their brand voice through strategic Marketing & Public Relations. Everything we do embodies that ideal because not only are we are passionate about women’s voices being heard, we have experienced, first hand, the silencing of those voices. I could go into lengthy detail about my career experiences: being accused of sleeping with upper level male employees, being called a “slut,” being told I am only being given opportunities because I “look good in a bathing suit.” You would be appalled: and if you aren’t, we’re not the agency for you. We are incredibly proud of the work we do to help women business owners; it drives us as a team and a mission-based agency. If the name of our company offends you, I encourage you to explore that. What is it about women owning their voice that threatens you? What is it about the word “Chik” that makes you uncomfortable? Words only have negative meaning when we give them the power to do so. Here at Chikmedia we choose to harness that power and use it for good. - Meghan Rothschild
